Viimeiset sävelet

Darwin

Darwin ja Barry, kanadalaisia molemmat, soittivat kauan sitten yhdessä kotikulmillaan Kanadassa. Molempien polut risteilivät maailmalla, tuoden monien mutkien kautta kummatkin Koh Samuille.

Keskiviikkona auringonnousun aikaan Byron kävi laskemassa tuhkat turkoosin meren syvyyksiin.

Samana iltana Darwinin ystävät kokoontuivat My Bariin muistelemaan loistavaa saksofonistia ja soittamaan yhdessä hänen muistolleen.

Samui All Stars.

Musiikin yhdistävä voima on aivan huikea!

- Tomppa

Alla Byronin avoin kirje:

To the Koh Samui All Stars & Musical Tribe

'Overwhelming' is the word that comes to mind to describe the incredible musical talent on this beautiful island.

And with the memories of last night's farewell to Darwin still fresh in my mind, I'd like to take a moment to thank you all on behalf of his family & many friends around the world for one of the most amazing musical experiences of my life!

As Darwin's (slightly) older brother, I've had the great pleasure of watching him perform many times through the years & there where at least two things about last night musical farewell that felt wonderfully unique to me. The generosity of both your time & your talent (with many of you juggling Darwin's farewell with your own gigs & other commitments) & your performances all came straight from the heart (just like Darwin would have played).

Some of you might not be aware - there was a time not long ago when Darwin was living back in Canada when he didn't touch his saxophone for more than 2 years! Then after a visit with Barry on Koh Samui, Darwin started talking about playing again. And when Darwin chose to start fresh in Thailand late last year I was thrilled when he told me his saxofone was coming along for the ride.

Here's where you deserve more of my thanks & admiration.

It was you who helped Darwin find his musical spark again, his new musical family & I'm forever grateful. The 'musical tribe' you've created here is quite magical & it's easy to see why Darwin chose Koh Samui as his new home.

Although his time with you was far too short, it means the world to me & his family to know he found happines here (again, thanks to YOU).

Last night you spoke to me about Darwin's kindness. His love to meet new people & have a good chat (must run in the family). You told me about the special way he listened to you - not just 'hearing', but really listening - & his (slightly twisted?) sense of humour.

You share stories about Darwin being genuine - a true friend - & someone who leaves you feeling better than when he found you.

And then there's his music...

You know better than anyone how rare & special talent Darwin was. He was born to share his passion with the world!

In all my days, in all my travels, I've never met another sax player who could pour his heart & soul into every note that came out of his saxophone the way Darwin could.

I'm so glad you had the opportynity to know the same Darwin, brother, friend I grew up with & am now finding it difficult to imagine my life without.

I wasn't prepared for the depth of caring, love & respect you all share for my brother over such a brief time. Please know Darwin would be proud to have shared the stage with you, his amazing musical tribe.

And finally, thank you for the care & support you gave to Darwin's nephew Finn when he suprised me with his performance. On a night full of suprises (thanks Barry!), I'm confident Finn will remember his first appearance on stage in Koh Samui always!

I like to imagine a 'passing of the sax' from Uncle to Nephew & hope Finn one day finds his tribe as Darwin found you.

Thank you for honouring his life in the very best way possible... through song.

My wish for you is to remember Darwin with a smile on your face & to know how important you were in his road to happiness.

May Darwin & his music forever find a place in your heart,

Byron & Nina, Finn & Maya

Darwinin muistolle.
